For safety reasons goalposts of any size (including portable goal posts) must always be anchored securely to the ground at all times. Portable goalposts must be secured as per the manufacturer’s instructions (we will provide on delivery) when stored, and in use in accordance with Mandatory Australian Standard AS4866.1-2007 and Product Safety Notices as issued by FFA and ACCC.
It is vital that all Sports Clubs and Associations comply with portable goalpost safety standards and conduct regular safety checks on goalposts and monitor their safe use, anchoring and storage.
- Goalposts of any size (including portable goals not installed permanently at a field) must always be anchored securely to the ground.
- Mandatory Goalpost Safety Standard AS4866.1-2007 and ACCC Product Safety Notice requires that all portable goalposts weighing over 28kg must be anchored with at least 10 x 300mm stakes or 10 sand bags or 12 bags of cement so that they cannot tip over.
- When not in use, goal posts must also be secured safely. Common practice is to secure the goals with a padlock or to secure the goals to a fixture or to each other and ensure they cannot be tipped over.
- Under no circumstances should children or adults be allowed to climb on, play or swing on the goalposts structure. This is because if not properly assembled and secured, portable goalposts may overturn.
- Regular inspections of goalposts must be carried out to check that they are properly maintained and adhere to safety notices.
- Portable goalposts should not be left in place after use. They should be dismantled and removed to a place of secure storage.
- The use of metal cup hooks on goals is banned and nets should only be secured by plastic hooks, net grips or tape. Any metal cup hooks should have been removed and replaced.
- Goalposts which are “home made” or which have been altered from their original size or construction should not be used.
All portable goals weighing 28kg + must be affixed with yellow warning stickers which alert the dangers of climbing or playing on goals and the possibility of them tipping over.
